Soccer and School: How Playing Helps Academic Success

Parents very often worry that soccer will take time away from academics and end up hurting their child's school performance. This concern makes sense, when you are looking at a soccer schedule, and realize that homework deadlines are competing for the same evening hours. But research consistently shows the opposite. 

Students who participate in extracurricular sports typically perform better academically than their non-athletic peers. Skills are developed on the field that translate directly to classroom success in ways that might surprise you. Rather than competing with education, soccer often can enhance it.

Time Management and Organizational Skills

Student athletes are going to quickly learn that they don't have unlimited time for homework and studying. They need to figure out how to use their available time efficiently. A player with practice four evenings per week can't procrastinate on assignments the way students with open schedules might. 

This level of constraint forces them to develop time management skills that serve them throughout their academic careers. Soccer players need to learn how to plan. They know which nights have practice and which are available for bigger projects. They learn to break their assignments down into smaller chunks in ways that fit around their other commitments. 

Goal Setting and Achievement Orientation

Soccer helps teach players to set goals for themselves and find ways to work toward them. Players learn to identify objectives and create plans to achieve them. When players have a goal-oriented mindset, they will find that skill transfers directly to academics. Students set grade targets, break down complex projects, and track their progress each day. They see that the skills they struggled with before are becoming easier through repetition. Building up a mindset like this makes them more willing to tackle difficult academic subjects.

Stress Management and Mental Health

Academic pressure is overwhelming. Especially for high school students that along with sports, are managing college applications and challenging coursework. Soccer provides a great healthy outlet for stress and anxiety. The physical activity the sport offers helps reduce stress hormones and releases endorphins that improve mood. The mental health benefits of exercise directly support their academic performance. Regular physical activity through sports like soccer helps regulate mood. The social support from teammates also provides emotional resources that help students handle academic stress.

Discipline and Work Ethic

Soccer forces players to have discipline. Players need to show up to practice on time, and put effort into instructions given by their coaches, even if they are tired or unmotivated. Having discipline in the athletic department transfers over to academic work. Students learn to complete assignments even when they don't feel motivated, to study when they'd rather relax, and to persist through difficult material. Athletes slowly understand how there is a connection between effort put in and results. Players who put in the most work improve the fastest, and they will also find that this directly relates academically.

Creating Student Athletes Who Excel

Maintaining appropriate balance between athletics and academics is key to being a well-rounded individual. When soccer becomes so consuming that students have no time for homework or adequate sleep, academic performance is going to suffer. However, if an athlete finds reasonable commitment levels, soccer is going to enhance rather than detracts from school success. 

The discipline, time management, stress relief, and confidence developed through soccer create students who are better equipped to handle academic demands.
