Find a Team That Challenges and Supports You
Play your best by finding a supportive team.

An ideal soccer team knows how to strike a balance between the challenge it offers, and the support it provides its players. When a team has too much challenge without support, players are going to be left overwhelmed and discouraged. Too much support without challenge leaves them comfortable but stagnant in their development. The best teams are able to push their players beyond their comfort zones, but also still provide the structure needed to foster growth. A team needs to find a balance between the two worlds. It is vital to the growth and fun of the game.
Why Both Challenge and Support are Needed
Challenge is a primary motivator for athlete development. Athletes who are not challenged to do more than they can do now will never reach their potential. They need to be in a space where they will face tougher competition and have to work harder. Being challenged creates the growth that turns good players into great ones. Without it, development stalls and players plateau.
But, support from your team makes the challenge far more sustainable. When players face difficulty without encouragement, they often become discouraged and give up. Support is going to provide the emotional foundation that lets players persist through the struggles they run into. They need the right support from the coaches and players around them to know which setbacks are learning experiences, and not failures. The mix of challenge and support is the perfect condition for players to push their limits but still keep their confidence and motivation.
Recognize Appropriate Challenge
The appropriate level of challenge is going to stretch a player without breaking them. On a well-matched team, players are going to face teammates and opponents who push them, but don't completely overwhelm them. What you need is an environment where an athlete can attempt skills slightly beyond their current level of play. When evaluating different teams, watch for signs of appropriate challenge.
When playing, there should be experiences of difficulty and occasional failure, but they should also have moments of success. If a player dominates without effort, there isn’t enough challenge. And on the other hand, if a player is being constantly overmatched and rarely finding any success, the challenge is too high. The right level pushes players while allowing them to experience progress.
Evaluate Coaching Balance
Great coaches are able to balance pushing players, with supporting them in the right ways. They are able to firstly set high expectations and then figure out how to challenge athletes to meet them. At the same time though, coaches should be able to provide guidance and encouragement, so they can actually find success. They should be able to identify when to demand more from a player, and when to offer reassurance.
Go to some practices and watch how coaches interact with players during practices and games. Make sure that the coaches are challenging players, while maintaining respect and an overall positive atmosphere. Figure out if they correct mistakes in ways that help players improve. Coaches who only criticize create discouraging environments, while coaches who only praise fail to drive improvement. You need to be able to find a coach that strikes a balance between the two.
Watch for Warning Signs
Certain warning signs are going to suggest that a team lacks proper balance. Teams that push relentlessly without support are going to produce players who are more anxious or discouraged, which risks their love for the game. Watch for signs of coaches and team mates putting too much pressure on the players.
The opposite warning signs also matter. Teams that provide comfort without any sort of challenge produce players who don't develop. If you are watching and players seem bored and unchallenged, the team might lack the things they need to improve their abilities. Neither extreme serves players well.
Selecting the Right Team
It takes some research to find a team that will both challenge and support players. Be sure to check out programs, watch practices, and then speak with the current families involved in the teams you are considering signing up for. Seek out teams where players are challenged to develop but are also supported along the way.
When you find the right fit, your child will be in an environment that will allow them to reach their potential without losing their love for the game. Young players need a balance of challenge and support to thrive.
